Three days passed. The diminished patrol marched to within a few miles of the Forgotten Legion’s main camp without meeting a soul. To Romulus’ relief, Asinius did not attempt to escape. Before the fort came into sight, Romulus led the legionaries east, to the mountains. Only these heights offered any cover, yet they were no place to linger. He would soon be forced to move on if they didn’t quickly make contact with some legionaries. Mountain goats might supplement their dwindling food, but the wily creatures were hard to track. Shelter and fuel would be a problem too, if their wait was to be more than a few days. The barren landscape offered little in the way of fuel for fires, and the caves in the vicinity were not suitable for withstanding the savage weather to come.

If the gods didn’t help them at once, the patience of men like Asinius would wear thin. He would gather support fast, thought Romulus, for the legionaries’ dull but stable existence had been turned on its head. They were now homeless fugitives, and what they had done would not long remain secret. When the legion’s commander grew concerned for his patrol, he would send men south to the abandoned fort, where the graves would be discovered. With every Parthian dead, and most of the legionaries vanished, it would be easy to deduce what had happened. Inside the next ten to fifteen days, a punitive force would be sent to seek out the killers – and every man knew it. Mayhap the Parthian commander would delay further action until reinforcements arrived – he might not trust his Roman troops to seek out and kill their fellows – but an attack would come before winter.

They had to act, Romulus decided, and fast.
